Higher Education Specialist Services

Our training is designed using evidence that awareness or culture change is best achieved when courses are tailored to the sector, the organisation and the team.

Higher Education is a special place. A place of opportunity – embedding and educating students about inclusion allows them to take those skills and understanding with them to wherever they go next. Many students also start to explore their own identities more deeply at university and it’s important that Higher Education is a welcoming, fair and transparent place.

Unfortunately that isn’t always the case. The culture in many universities is as affected by systemic racism, classism, ageism and many other -isms as anywhere else. Universities are complex organisations with many hierarchical structures, and these can be slow to change, despite the will of many many individuals.

Higher Education is trying to do better – helped by charter marks and accreditation such as the Athena SWAN charter and the race equality charter. Many universities take part in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index and are members of the Disability Confident Scheme.

With over 20 years experience as an academic and leader within Higher Education, I’ve been there, done that. From being a minority (gender) undergraduate, to PhD student, to researcher, to lecturer, head of department, professor and Dean for Diversity and Inclusion I have many perspectives to draw on that allow me to offer specialist services to UK HE institutions.

HE Services

Support for Departmental Athena SWAN submissions.

Having written and actively supported a number of successful departmental and institutional Athena SWAN submissions (Bronze and Silver) and served and moderated numerous panels for AdvanceHE, I can offer services ranging from a critical friend review of a near final draft to data analysis (my background as a physical scientist helps here), or facilitating action plan development sessions.

  • Critical friend review including written and live feedback (£1500).
  • Facilitated action plan development session – from £300
  • Larger scale consultancy projects – from £450/day for 7+ days

(Please note I do not offer this service for institutional level applications)

Training for researchers, students and staff

I have developed and delivered a number of one-off workshops for everyone from PhD students to professors including:

  • unconscious bias awareness and mitigation
  • active bystander and allyship
  • diversity and inclusion 101 and what it means for my research

90 minute workshops online start from £500 (for a maximum of 50 participants). Discounted repeats available.

Other modes of delivery available – please ask for details.

Consciously Inclusive Leadership Team Development Programme

Not your normal unconscious bias workshop, but a longer term programme (spread over 12 weeks) that delivers lasting culture and behaviour change. Comprising 3 group workshops (motivation, key knowledge and current debates, introduction to our naturally biased selves, “doing better” as individuals and as an organisation), guided self study (where are my unhelpful biases?) and 2 hours 1-2-1 coaching.

Cost for 10 participants, £5500. Other size groups by request.

If you have a different specific diversity and inclusion training or development need, please get in touch for a conversation about how I could develop that with, and for, you.
